The French Institute of the Alliance Française of Cincinnati is proud to offer French classes on the various aspects of French culture.

The French Institute offers :
- Different class levels;
- Customized teaching for business and industry

We are meeting all your needs, whether you want to learn French, improve your French knowledge, or speak French like a native, thanks to:
- Several sessions during the year
- Multiple levels for adults
- Weekly classes (1,5 hrs for adults 1 hour for children)
- Small groups (about 8 students per class)

Private Lessons . . . to meet your needs.

If you need flexibility to accommodate your busy schedule, or you feel that you will benefit from learning at your own pace, private lessons with one of our instructors are for you. Private lessons are designed to meet your personal goals: preparing for a trip, a test, reviewing specific grammar points, or any other goals you may have.

Location: One of our instructors can instruct at your home, their home or any other approved location.

Duration and Schedule: Duration and schedule of classes depends on your needs; classes must be purchased in denominations of 5 hours.

Fees

1 hour class (1 student): $40 / 1 hour class (2-3 students) $60

Any books or materials used, if any, are at an additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

 
How long is each term?

12 weeks in fall, 12 weeks in spring and two 8 week sessions in the summer.

When do you offer classes?

In the evenings, Monday through Thursday, and Saturday mornings. 

How often do classes meet?
Classes meet once a week for an hour and a half. 

How many students are in each class?
Classes have between 3 and 8 students.

How long will it take me to learn to speak French?
You can expect to be able to express basic ideas in French after completing the first 2 to 3 levels of the program depending on your level or dedication.

How do I know which level to choose?
You can either choose the level based on the course description or you can take the on-line test.

Can I register after the official registration period?
You may still register for a course during the first 4 weeks of any 8-week term.

Where do I purchase my books?
Books are purchased and picked up during Registration. If you register by mail, you may pick-up your books at your first class.

Will I be able to receive a tuition credit or refund if I need to withdraw from a class?
No refunds will be given after the first week of classes.

 

Teacher Bios

TARDIVON, Sarah

Sarah has been with l’Alliance Française since September 2007.  She has experience teaching French as a foreign language at all levels.  Sarah was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has a Bachelor of Arts in French as well as a Bachelor of Science in Education from Miami University.  She studied at l’Université de Bourgogne in Dijon and completed her student teaching at the American International School in Luxembourg.  Sarah has also taught French at various high schools in Ohio and Michigan.  She also lived in Strasbourg, France, for 2 years.  Sarah and her French husband have 2 little girls whom they are raising bilingual.

PITTENGER, Samantha

Samantha has been with the Alliance Française for 2 years and has extensive experience teaching French as a foreign language at all levels. She was born in Columbus , Ohio and holds a bachelor’s in French language and literature as well as a B.S. in Education, and a M.Ed. from the  University of Cincinnati . She studied at the Université de Caen and taught at the Université de Nantes. Samantha teaches French at Milford High School .  

FARHAT, Samia Toufik

Samia Toufik Farhat is a native French speaker, born in Morocco . She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Science and Information (ESI), Rabat, Morocco. She has an extensive experience teaching French both in Morocco and the United States . She has been with the Alliance Française since 2003.


DE ATLEY, John

John De Atley has been with l'Alliance Française since September, 2008.  While a student at Indiana University, he spent his third year at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques d'Aix-en-Provence, and loved France so much that he returned after graduation to be an English teaching assistant for a French high school.  He received a M.A in French from the University of Missouri and is currently in his third year as the French teacher at Pendleton County High School in Falmouth, Kentucky. 

MEEKER, Marjolaine

Marjolaine Meeker is a native French-speaker born in Montreal, Quebec. She lived nine years in France, and has studied in both English and French-speaking schools.  She holds an Associate’s Degree in Pre-Med from Canadian CEGEP Lionel-Groulx, a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Ambassador University in Pasadena, California and a Master in Education with a Certification in French from Lindenwood University in Saint Louis, Missouri.  She has taught French at the Elementary, High School and University levels. Marjolaine loves to travel, and at last count has visited 46 countries on 6 continents. She has co-directed volunteer youth programs in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  She and her husband (also fluent in French) have two daughters who are fluent in French and English and conversant in Spanish.

MAILLARD HEKKING, Clarisse

Clarisse Maillard Hekking is a French native from Reims, France. She has lived in the US for ten years. Prior to coming to the US she worked as a linguist for the French navy. She also has experience in teaching French to American employees of French companies in the US and teaching English to American companies in France.  She is married with five small children. She enjoys reading, being with her family, and traveling.

GAUTHIER/MONTEIRO, Ludivine

Ludivine Gauthier/Monteiro has recently been with the l'Alliance Française as teacher for French and Belgian children living in the USA.. She is a native speaker from Paris. She holds a master's of International Law from La Sorbonne, Paris and completed studies at  the Institute of Legal Studies, University Pantheon, Paris. She moved from France to Cincinnati one year ago with her husband and her daughter.

GARDNER, Sarah

Sarah Gardner is new to the Alliance Francaise. She was born in New York, but raised in Montreal, Quebec. Sarah has a B.A, in French Language and Literature from the University of Toronto. As part of her studies, she spent a year in Aix-en-Provence studying linguistics. Sarah has experience tutoring high school students in French as a second language, but also has a strong affinity for working with children
